WASH in Schools
Every Child Deserves a Safe Toilet and Clean Water at School
Safe toilets, clean water and hygiene habits for every child, every day, with priority for schools with girl children.

THE PROGRAM
Infrastructure that keeps working.
Access to functional toilets and safe drinking water in schools directly affects children's health, dignity, and critically attendance, especially for adolescent girls. Many schools across India still operate with non-functional, unsafe, or altogether absent WASH facilities. Saaf Sutra's WASH in Schools program builds and rehabilitates school sanitation infrastructure while embedding hygiene education into the daily life of the school, so clean habits are learned as early as clean facilities are built.
What we do
- Construct and rehabilitate child-friendly, gender-sensitive toilets and handwashing stations
- Ensure safe, reliable drinking water access on school premises
- Deliver hygiene education and behaviour-change programs for students and teachers
- Train school staff and student cadres (e.g., "WASH champions") to sustain facility upkeep
- Track attendance, health and usage outcomes to demonstrate program impact
Why schools
Schools are where lifelong hygiene habits are formed. A single well-run school WASH model influences not just one classroom, but an entire generation's relationship with sanitation and hygiene — and gives Saaf Sutra some of its strongest, most measurable evidence for donors and education departments alike.
Build a model that lasts.
